What do you do when your world flips upside down and turns you inside out? How then would you live with the pain of loss and realization that there’s no going back?
A healing odyssey to find the one constant in life–her voice–spurred a spiritual journey for this singer and self-proclaimed “godless one.” Consciousness bloomed, birthing new life. A pathway opened to reveal her own soul.
Breathing Life into Death is meant as an invitation and conversation starter about the experience of “life” when “dying” intrudes on one’s everyday reality.
Through the immediacy of poetry, song lyrics, and references to visions, Pushkara Sally Ashford shares her reflections from both sides of the veil, inviting input and dialogue with readers.
Consciousness, awareness and inspiration forthcoming from extra-ordinary moments, is the medium. Each life holds and reveres them, but the question becomes how to make sense of and integrate them into everyday existence.
A profound spiritual awakening followed by the dissolution of the known universe through a subsequent “near-death experience” provide context for Pushkara’s present understanding and insight. As grace would have it, both experiences coincided with the stabilizing guidance of a master–her guru.
When she lost her voice, her “art” and raison d’etre at age 39, life as she’d known it dematerialized in short order, and a road less traveled opened to her. Journaling became her principal avenue of expression.
Oftentimes, words failed to comport feeling. The poems and songs that emerged from everyday noticing, as well as, through dreams and visions are scattered among the countless journals she’s kept over decades since her awakening.
Pushkara lays no claim to fame as a poet or songwriter. Her journey has been in the be-ing and living through experience. In this, her most fervent prayer is for resonance and connection in sharing it with others.
